Most public lands, including wilderness areas, remain open during the pandemic. But closures due to increasing infection rates in many states and unsafe visitor behavior are resurfacing.

Indoor spaces, like visitor centers, and other public facilities may still be closed or have strict social distancing measures you must adhere to. Have a mask, buff, or bandana ready in case you encounter a situation where you are less than 6 feet from others (ex.

Postpone extended backcountry trips, including thru-hikes on national scenic or historic trails. When traveling close to home, be fully self-sufficient by reducing or eliminating your interactions with local tourism industry services--gas stations, hotels, rest stops, grocery stores etc.--along the way and in communities near wilderness.

DON'T CONTRIBUTE TO RECREATION ': Unprecedented numbers of people are visiting public lands during the pandemic causing everything from crowding on trails to the creation of makeshift campsites to piles of human feces and trash. Be flexible with your outdoor plans, so you can avoid popular areas by 1) choosing a different access point 2) getting outdoors at a less busy time of the day 3) practice no-waste camping and 4) be well-educated about Leave No Trace techniques, specifically those related human waste.

Engaging in risky backcountry sports, or even just hiking something outside your level of expertise, increases your chances of being injured--whether you twist your ankle, fall while climbing, or get caught in an avalanche. Make overly safe choices, stay within your recreational comfort zone, and save that sick line, sketchy traverse, and rad vertical for another day (or another year!).

Volunteer groups may not be hosting typical trail work or trash collection outings. Be extra vigilant about following Leave No Trace principles when in wilderness or any other outdoor public space.

U.S. Forest Service Caring for the land and serving people We are actively compiling tips from our community on the latest campground closures, limitations and openings for campers due to COVID-19 -19.

While following safety guidelines from local and federal governments, National Parks are beginning to reopen after COVID-19 closures. Parks plans to reopen in phases so prepare for limited operations, including closed campgrounds and visitor centers.

Plan ahead by contacting parks prior to visiting and making advanced camping reservations. See the full list of National Parks whose operations have changed due to the Coronavirus below or see all alerts from NPS.

During this time it is still best to check ahead before planning to stay and make sure to leave no trace. During March 2020, more than 30 states have closed campgrounds or delaying their openings to correspond with new guidelines on social gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 -19.

While these eased up in the summer months, make sure to check individual parks and campgrounds closed in each state by reading our state-by-state guide below. Private RV parks and campgrounds in the U.S. are deemed “essential” by local governments on a case-by-case basis.

All Alabama state parks state-owned public areas will remain open for entry and camping until further notice with limitations on crowd size and some facilities.

All beaches will be open to gatherings of 10 or fewer people following social distancing guidelines. All outdoor activities including hiking, camping, and fishing will be allowed as long as social distancing guidelines are respected.

While restrictions including limited events, no drinking fountains, and closure of many visitor centers is taking place, amenities at campgrounds including bathrooms, picnic tables, and shelters have reopened. The Byrd Visitor Center (mile 51) interior exhibits remain closed, however, an outdoor contact station will be staffed in front of the building every Saturday & Sunday, as well as President’s Day. If the Skyline Drive is closed due to inclement weather, the contact station will not be staffed.

Due to COVID-19, the number of visitors will be limited inside the buildings. We have compiled all active alerts for campgrounds and cabins in the Recreation.gov network, which includes properties in some but not all National Park, Bureau of Land Management areas, US Forest Service areas and more.
