I was thinking Africa, but I'm totally fucking clueless if that would be the best choice in the long run. The NA one is good for getting aircraft in the sky quickly after deploying new satellites.

SA I find kind of useless as it's rather easy to get those in the first place, so the buff becomes rather pointless rather quickly. Europe gives you faster research on alien tech, I think.

None of the others really matter early in the game, it's by far the best bonus to have late-game, and it's the continent with the worst countries to hold (which you don't need to if you start there). As a reference, although my game went sorta long, by the time I finished my first play through the Africa bonus had given me 2,5k cash overall.

Getting earlier access to the Training School Perks and cutting foundry costs has been a great long-term investment for helping my team ramp up. Though, as I'm passing through what feels like the midgame, and have almost exhausted the ITS, I wonder if I might regret that choice.

NA gives you 300 starting cash and 200 base income, so your first two months are a bit easier. I've found the progress you can make each month is directly tied to how much money you have at your disposal.

Being able to expand your base and outfit your troops as quickly as possible is pretty important early in the game. You don't want to be scrambling to build additional satellite uplinks while council cities burn.

I took the US using my first (free) satellite as it offers the most monthly income (+$180) then took Canada and Mexico with the next 2, so I could collect the NA continent bonus ASAP. NA gives you 300 starting cash and 200 base income, so your first two months are a bit easier.

I realize that by skipping the tutorial I send the bunch of my soldiers to death, but hey, that was going to happen anyway. @MikeGosot I haven't played yet, but I heard someone talking that if you get a satellite in every country of a continent, you get their bonus.

So yeah, I think that getting Africa, than covering South America(Since it's the one with fewer countries) is the way to start! I really didn't find the tutorial too long as a new player to the genre. I found it helpful for juggling all the systems.

@MariachiMacabre : The straight up “this is how you move your soldiers” etc part of the tutorial isn't too long, but the game is forcing choices on you for quite a while. I took the Asia bonus and am quite happy with it since half the cowardly punks bailed from Com as soon as they could.

I picked Europe because my only other option was NA and based on my knowledge of the game (none) that seemed like the best choice. Is there any way to choose a country, or is the location fixed based on your continent choice.

I picked Europe because my only other option was NA and based on my knowledge of the game (none) that seemed like the best choice. Asia's bonus is quite beastly if you want to use S.H.I.V.s and more importantly, to get through the Officer's training school quicker.

Getting all the upgrades fast is amazing, and it frees you up to go for money making missions more often. Asia's bonus is quite beastly if you want to use S.H.I.V.s and more importantly, to get through the Officer's training school quicker.

Getting all the upgrades fast is amazing, and it frees you up to go for money making missions more often. Here's the thing, if you do some math you will realize that the Africa bonus is basically -25% reduction on ALL expenditures, however it doesn't take effect before the first month has passed.

For any of the other bonuses to be comparable you need to spend at least half (actually a bit more) of your money on that specific thing. There is of a case to be made that being able to buy a ton of Officer training stuff early could create a cascading effect, but at higher levels of difficulty you won't have access to it from the start of the game anyways.

South America: is the most useless, research is fast anyway even without many labs, and autopsies and interrogation are some of the fastest of these anyway. Europe: very worthwhile, engineers are a key factor to expanding your base, an as such you will be building and maintaining a LOT of workshops, especially if you want to fast track your uplink/satellite pipeline.

Africa : useful early game, tho not as useful as Europe IMO, simply because the council funding should only be a portion of your total income anyway. Asia's bonus is quite beastly if you want to use S.H.I.V.s and more importantly, to get through the Officer's training school quicker.

You can get a lot of your funding from selling off stuff from alien craft and excess corpses. A single early mission can net you 200, which is as much as the base starting monthly funding.

By mid-game yes the Africa bonus can become significant and a major factor, it's great in fact. Asia needs the most (5), so getting it and then ignoring the other Asian countries will still get you the bonus, and those upgrades get really expensive and make the most out of your soldiers, which in higher difficulties are the backbone of your success.

Continent bonuses are gameplay perks gained by achieving complete satellite coverage of all Council nations on each continent in COM : EnemyUnknown. There are five available bonuses, but the first bonus is automatically granted (without satellite coverage) based on the starting continent chosen for COM 'headquarters when creating a new game; the other bonuses may be obtained through improving XCOM's global satellite coverage.

Future Combat Expert Knowledge All In COM Funding We Have Ways Air and Space Air coverage is very important at the start, if you miss some UFOs you're boned resource wise.

Belgium posted... Europe... is fantastically bad now that I look at it, though it was my first pick based off the original. Europe's bonus continues for as long as you play the game.

Second, Thin Man and Floaters take about 7 days to Interrogate and Autopsy EACH. That's Laser Weapons a month early. South America's bonus is AWESOME early on.

I just don't have enough cash for Foundry upgrades early on, and I only ever get 2 Workshops the whole GAME (and no Labs), so Europe and Asia don't do much for me. Cheap Interceptors ARE nice, but the bonus for North America doesn't kick in for REAL until Firestorm comes out honestly.

If I don't go South America, it's invariably the first place I send Sat's too, and that can ruin the panic management early on... On the other hand, it IS the easiest bonus to grab via Sat's... Disclaimer: I never build labs or workshops, thus my dislike of Europe's bonus.

That is, if I start with Asia but then lose India, I still keep Future Combat. Personally, I agree with the common sentiment that SA is disposable, and We Have Ways is pretty useless; most autopsy and interrogation researches aren't *that* great anyway, and you wouldn't have the money for all the foundry research until your science is fast enough to only take a couple of days per, anyway.

All In likely has the highest potential, but since you only need to launch three SATs to secure it, you might still be better off with Future Combat or Expert Knowledge. Expert Knowledge seems to have a better help early on, though Future Combat likely edges it out by late game.

The correct answer is Asia, it saves you the most amount of money early/mid-game but at the same it's not really worth covering the entire Asian continent with satellites due to the low money giving countries (specifically India and Australia) unlike Europe. It's not worth starting in North America and Africa you can easily get their bonuses with satellites. And lastly South America is a joke, it gives little money and the bonus is poor so ignore it.

Rivers posted... Africa is the best continent buff but is also not the best place to start. And there's no reason whatsoever to put sat son Egypt or South Africa until very late game.

And there's no reason whatsoever to put sat son Egypt or South Africa until very late game. Whereas, someone who starts in Europe and wants the Africa bonus would have to “waste” two of his satellites on low-income countries to get it, and the amount gained would barely offset the difference.

It's great being able to put your first few extra satellites over high-income countries like the US or Russia, and stacking the African +30% on top of the US's 180 income is tremendous. )Europe and North America are good to start in, due to the high per-country income; Europe's okay to get for the long term, but NA's just not very important unless your air strategy is to keep lots of cheap planes with Avalanche Missiles instead of developing better weapons. Asia's decent to start in, but if you don't start there it's not important to get its bonus (because by the time you do, you will have bought most of the stuff already).

And South America just stinks, period; its only real advantage is that as a 2-country continent, you can pretty safely ignore abduction missions in countries there, but that doesn't help if you start there. And there's no reason whatsoever to put sat son Egypt or South Africa until very late game.

Do everywhere else first. Europe and North America are good to start in, due to the high per-country income; Europe's okay to get for the long term, but NA's just not very important unless your air strategy is to keep lots of cheap planes with Avalanche Missiles instead of developing better weapons. Asia's decent to start in, but if you don't start there it's not important to get its bonus (because by the time you do, you will have bought most of the stuff already). NA made it possible for me to provide stated continents with extra cheap interceptors, and on normal, cheap interceptors can bring anything down in sufficient numbers, at least until you do the base mission.

It's probably the biggest help early on in keeping unnecessary panic down without breaking the budget. After Russia, I diverted to SA by the time I had the arc thrower, and I'd been saving up most of the corpses.

Personally I love the Europe buff because I spam the **** out of workshops but what I've been thinking of recently concerns trying to maintain all the member nations. South America's bonus is underwhelming but one thing to consider starting there is that if you do and put ONE satellite over the other nation you will NEVER lose either (providing you shoot down all the ships and raid landed ones) as abductions will not occur there. Similarly, for other 3 nation continents as they require fewer satellites to prevent abductions on them.

The fewer continents you need to cover the more you can calculate your management of panic and future placement of satellites.
