Even the virtually unknown Sanhedrin and Yuri in the Mendocino National Forest are well worth a visit. While they are too beautiful and unique places, I chose to focus this list on National Forest Wilderness areas.
John Muir Wilderness (Sierra and Into National Forests) Dominated by multiple ragged and soaring granite peaks, including Mt. Whitney the highest in the continental US, this Wilderness encompasses everything John Muir stood for and loved in the Sierra Nevada: wildness, climbing, glaciers, wildlife and solitude.
The Wilderness is home to the world’s oldest living tree, the bristle cone pine, but habitat ranges from desert scrub to alpine. Below the multiple glaciers on the mountain are volcanic activity and massive fir and pine forests.
Steep and rugged beauty feature the coast mountains and include many large redwoods, the tallest tree on earth. It is the nation’s most visited wilderness, but a permit system has greatly helped with visitor ship.
San Gabriel Wilderness (Angeles National Forest) Where else can you be drinking champagne and eating caviar with fabulous stars in Los Angeles one moment, and then walking near a herd of bighorn sheep in sparse conifer forest the next? Miskito’s lush forest in the farthest reaches of wet northwestern California harbors special species.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our Vision At Earth Path Education we encourage the experience of being at home in nature and within oneself. We empower girls, boys, young women and men, adults and elders to claim the path to earth connection that is within each of us.
When we commune with our unity; we naturally develop compassionate communication skills with all beings. With an understanding of our inter-connectedness to Earth and each other, we grow the roots to support a life of balanced giving and receiving.
We help grow a culture of listening to mother earth as our wisest mentor. When students are empowered to root in processes like making fire, foraging wild foods, making rope, and learning bird songs; they begin to feel capable of relaxing and deepening in the wilderness.
We believe that learning skills of how to source our human lives from the abundant life around us grows respect; respect for the plants that heal our wounds, the sticks that give us warmth, and the creek that cools us. The rites of passage are also a key part to the health of the village, pumping all members with health, inspirations and vitality, bringing to the village the vision seeds that are to sprout us into a more harmonious way of relating.
Ceremonial Arts:At Earth Path Education we are committed to the beauty way. Our dreams bring us messages, and as we tune into our rhythms, and synch up with the rhythms of the land.
The earth starts to dream up through us, clarifying our purpose, calling us forward, and illuminating our gifts. Our ceremonies are an art of listening, to that wisdom which has been held in the earth and is just waiting to be danced up through us.
As every element becomes an integral part of the whole system, the whole community becomes more dynamic, harmonious, and energy efficient. These enhanced relationships reduce maintenance and stress, while increasing yields and happiness.
We help guide each other to feel confident in achieving our dreams, and manifesting a life that we are happy to be living each day. We believe that the most harmonious accomplishments come from a people who love what they were doing, feeling that their calling, is a place where one's passion is meeting the Christ of the world and bringing sweet water to the driest of places.
We support our participants in finding this inspiration, passion, and motivation within themselves and taking action on their calling. Meet Our Instructors offer instruction from connected, knowledgeable Ecologists, Naturalists, Primitive Skills Enthusiasts, and Crafts Teachers, and other Earth-loving individuals.

TASK is geared toward developing leadership, through a group-oriented community project implemented by the campers, and through special programs. Throughout the session, Tasers experience pride and fulfillment as they enrich the Camp JCA Shalom campus.
In addition, Tasers get to experience the best components of the general camp program along with a special out-of-camp overnight trip. In TASK Kibbutz, we transport ourselves back a hundred years ago to feel what it was like for some of the pioneers who made their way to Israel.
By creating a kibbutz at JCA, the Kibbutzim will come together as a tightly-knit community, grow closer to the land; learn about sustainability and organic farming; and gain knowledge of kibbutz life in Israel- all while having fun at camp! Workshops in Jewish programming, child development and leadership training, along with observation, individual supervision and actual work with younger campers, helps the CIT explore the functioning and philosophy of camp, and develop his/her leadership abilities.
This is an enriching and exciting experience as well as an important step towards future staff positions at camp. By the end of the summer, the City have the opportunity to become junior counselors during Session 3, and will receive a small stipend.
