Wake up in the morning, open the window, water my plants here and sip a cup of tea. It’s fantastic to build a small herb garden in your windowsill.

Love having a cute small succulent garden in your home? To make it more attractive, you can grow some varieties at a time.

Normally, we place indoor plants in the bedroom, bathroom and living room but these also thrive in your windowsill. Grow your herbs in pretty pots and place them in line in the windowsill.

Grow your herbs in impressively-painted cans and place in line in your windowsill. You can turn your mason jars into herb planters and place them in the windowsill to create a mini indoor garden.

Basil, cilantro, and parsley require consistently moist soil, while chives, thyme, sage, rosemary, and oregano can handle drier conditions. Allium-family crops : Albums like green onions and garlic make great indoor plants because they require minimal space and soil.

Green onions can even be grown soulless in a mason jar of water. Loose-leaf lettuce is one of the easiest leafy greens to grow in a window, followed by spinach.

Since leafy greens don’t have significant root systems, feel free to plant them in a shallow container. Bush-bean varieties are a better fit for a windowsill garden than pole beans because the plant grows in a compact bush form.

Common choices for indoor growing are hyacinths, daffodils, geraniums, cyclamens, and African violets. Tomatoes are a sun-loving plant that requires full-sun conditions (at least five hours a day), so avoid adding them to your garden if your window doesn’t get enough sun.

Brandon McMillan’s Guide to Training Dogs of All Sizes to Heel Ron Finley Community activist and self-taught gardener Ron Finley shows you how to garden in any space, nurture your plants, and grow your own food.

Improvise and act, get some window boxes, hanging baskets or make some cool DIY containers. It’s fun and exciting, and you’ll be successful if you care about a few things: Your window must receive minimum 4-5 hours of sunlight, you should fertilize your plants correctly and the balance in watering must be maintained (avoiding both overwatering and under watering).

It doesn’t require a sunny window, a few hours of sunlight is enough, if not, you can also use artificial light. And the best part is you can make decorative arrangements, combining red or green leaf lettuces in the same pot or choosing variegated ones.

A great way to grow and enjoy fresh, organic, juicy tomatoes indoors. For best results, choose dwarf varieties (cherry tomatoes, are perfect).

Also, some varieties that grow well on windowsill include Early Salad, Red Cushion, Pretty Patio, and Tiny Tim. A Tip: Cherry tomatoes don’t require a big deep pot, you can use a small to medium-sized container.

A Tip: Keep the soil slightly moist and provide shallow but wide planter, a 6 inches deep pot would be sufficient. Exotic, hot, spicy, and colorful– You can grow chilies on your kitchen windowsill.

Growing carrot on a windowsill is possible, and you can expect a decent homegrown harvest in small pots or window boxes. Growing this root vegetable in containers is easy, and it doesn’t take much space too.

In a week, you’ll have a jar full of healthy delicate sprouts that you can sprinkle on salads, add to sandwiches or toss into soups for a delicious and healthful twist on your favorite recipes. When the leaves dry, dig up the soil to harvest the garlic bulbs.

A big bowl of green leaves can be a prime source of vitamins A, C, K and folic acid. And microgreens (aka seedlings of herbs and vegetables) maybe even more nutrient-rich and tasty than the mature ones.

A Tip: To grow microgreens you will need seeds of various greens and a wide but shallow tray. Radishes grow so fast and require little care and don’t mind the small pots.

Now, before all you purists begin to send me hate-mail, please know that I still, to this very day till my own land, plant my own seeds, and grow my own herbs and vegetables outdoors; I haven’t embraced the future completely! But let’s be honest: It’s generally more pleasant to grow fresh herbs without the sunburn or the bug bites.

They’re relatively new and come loaded with features like watering and nutrient reminders, plus automatic full spectrum LED lighting. Most high-level industry-standard hydroponic rigs that you would see in a commercial garden are extremely expensive and hard to set up.

If you’re only wanting to grow a few herbs for the dinner table, you don’t need a multi-planter rig that takes up loads of space! Powerful units, like the AeroGarden Bounty, will use up to 50 watts (not bad for such a sizable system), while smaller more portable units, like the Fin ether Smart Herb Kit, use around 5 watts because of the onboard LED lighting systems.

The more elite hydroponic kits come with touch-screen control panels that alert you when it’s time to add water or nutrients along with activating the onboard LED lighting for you; this is called automated grow, and it’s awesome! Unfortunately, most hydroponic kits do not come with automated grow, instead, they generally have a very simple water >> lighting >> menu button system.

For those who are willing to spend a little extra cash, always go for automated grow, it’ll save you a lot of time and potential frustration (especially if you’re the type of person who constantly forgets to water your plants like myself). Each year companies like AeroGarden, Click and Grow, and IRS Garden come out with incredible kits that make the previous models look archaic.

The Aerogarden Bounty Elite is seriously the gold standard kit for indoor gardening. There is simply no other product that provides the same level of ease, plant-growth speed, and additional growing features for such a low price-point.

Not to mention, the Bounty’s LED lighting system only consumes 50-Watts, so you don’t need to worry about any sudden spikes in your electricity bill. Automatic grow is usually not offered within this price range, but AeroGarden makes good with an easy-to-understand LCD control panel which reminds you when to water and add food.

The Gearbox is a little less expensive than the Smart Garden 3 system and still packs a powerful punch. My mind was changed after seeing a friend and fellow gardener’s Basil yields sprout within roughly thirty days.

It holds onto nutrients better than soil and is lighter, allowing for more oxygen to reach the plant’s roots. You’ll also receive 3 light-weight and remarkably sturdy coconut coir planting pots.
