Days Gone is set in a grim, post-apocalyptic Oregon after a global pandemic has turned the majority of the population into zombie -like creatures known as Breakers. As Oregon is overrun by the bloodthirsty Breakers, Deacon’s still on the hunt for his wife throughout the game’s living, breathing world.
It offers a tense, satisfying vision of the zombie apocalypse, and Deacon is a protagonist whose easy to root for. Dead Island : flip-flops, the sun shining bright up in the sky, and entrails strewn along the beach.
Oh, and you’ll do this by darting around the island whacking zombies into pulp, creating weapons out materials you find on the ground, and running for your life. After society collapses thanks to a virus outbreak, Resident Evil -style, you must find a way to get supplies for your shelter and avoid all the zombies sauntering around outside.
That’s what photojournalist Frank West finds himself dealing with in Dead Rising as he descends upon a shopping center in Willamette, Colorado that’s drowning in the undead. Here’s the good news: Despite the fact that there are hundreds of zombies around you, you can use literally anything you find as a weapon, including a lawnmower, guitar, and chairs.
Dying Light is an interesting take on the zombie apocalypse that will eventually come for us all (mark our words), serving up some frenetic, raucous danger that just isn’t found in most of the other games of its ilk. Your protagonist Kyle Crane, the humanitarian Global Relief Effort’s main man who’s been tasked with tracking down a particularly unsavory bandit leader who has dark secrets on the organization in his pocket.
You’ve got to use your very best hardcore parkour skills to avoid the bloodthirsty suckers while staying in the light, picking off the brutish undead, and working toward some semblance of normalcy as you figure out what to about your mission. This gritty first-person shooter can be enjoyed alone or with friends, and you’ll need all the help you can get as you fight through waves of bloodthirsty undead Zeds.
Left 4 Dead, Valve’s seminal zombie -slaying multiplayer classic, is one of the best games for rounding up a few friends and getting your frag on while eliminating scores of the undead. Join four unique survivors as they blast their way through Boomers, Witches, Hunters, and run-of-the-mill zombies (as well as a few surprises here and there), clearing out hordes of the shambling undead as they go.
Hundreds of reasons to go absolutely nuts on the dozens of zombies streaming into the map with their sights set to kill. They’re absolute must-plays for zombie fans, and it’s a terrible crime that we won’t be seeing a Left 4 Dead 3 this console generation, most likely.
Lollipop Chainsaw puts you in the miniskirt of chainsaw-wielding Juliet Starling, who hacks and slashes her way through zombies as they descend upon San Romero High School and end up infecting her boyfriend Nick. You’ve got a New Jersey clerk, Miami lawyer, Kentucky cop, and other motley characters to travel alongside as you scavenge for supplies, fight off zombies, and hope you all reach your destination alive.
This open-world survival game puts you right in the heart of Knox County, which is overflowing with zombies and quarantined by the government. As a survivor who isn’t really receiving any assistance from said government, you’ve got to find supplies to stave off hunger, pain, tiredness, and stay sane while keeping away the slow, plodding zombies that threaten your livelihood every single day.
The excellent Red Dead Redemption gets a zombie makeover as the undead descend upon the town of Blackwater. Hero John Mars ton must stave off the reanimated dead after they bite and zombie his wife Abigail and uncle, looking for a way to lift the curse that’s befallen the town with the virus and fighting off zombies at every turn.
Seeing Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield with stunning new character models, voice work, and a gorgeous new set of environments gave the game an even spookier edge, transforming one of the scariest zombie games of all time into a much more terrifying affair. This update of a seminal classic still holds up today in every conceivable way, and is well worth picking up and experiencing, especially if you’ve never played the original.
Resident Evil 2 Remake is as close to perfect as remasters and HD versions can get, and that’s saying a lot of considering how many there have been over the years. Cap com worked some absolutely astonishing magic on an already excellent survival horror classic, completely remaking it from the ground up.
Join rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield on their journey through a zombie -ravaged Raccoon City. It appeared on the PlayStation 2, Wii, and Xbox 360 later on in its life cycle, but the Gamete release is the debut version, and the one everyone fell in love with as soon as they blew away their first Canada.
It featured a mixture of new, rugged vision of Leon S. Kennedy, quick-time events from hell, and an excellent plot even Resident Evil veterans had to stand up and take note of. Though it arguably strayed from the series’ survival horror roots, it was an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride that made a lasting mark on the industry for years to come, and one of the bestzombiegames of all time, by far.
Despite being played in first person, it eschewed the constant stop-and-pop zombie -slaying gameplay from the past few games for a more puzzle-oriented storyline positively riddled with creeping dread and horror. That remains true with State of Decay 2, which finds players building a community in a bid to survive against seemingly never-ending hordes of zombies.
Plus, this entry is a much more polished affair than the previous game, and you’ll find that it’s even more difficult as well, thanks to its satisfying combat and push for realism. Telltale knocked it out of the park with its portrayal of the award-winning comic series The Walking Dead, introducing an original cast of characters that immediately captured the hearts and minds of everyone who played it.
Introducing protagonist Lee Everett, surrogate parent to young Clementine, it forced us all to confront everyday fears like losing everything to zombies while still having to fight them off and make some semblance of a life. Though Telltale Games is sadly no longer with us as a studio anymore, it left behind a legacy that we won’t soon forget: Clementine will remember this.
If you like your zombie movies and games cheesy, gory, and a little R-rated, you’ll be thrilled with The House of the Dead: Overkill, which has you blasting away zombies as part of a rail shooter filled with explicit language, raunchy jokes, and violent imagery that makes for a cult movie-like experience. Made even cooler by the Typing of the Dead version that debuted later, it’s one of the weirdest and most hilarious takes on the zombie game that you’ll ever see.
Naughty Dog brought us the cinematic excellence of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and memorable platformer Crash Bandicoot years before that, but it outdid itself with The Last of Us. It follows a man named Joel who treks with teenage girl Ellie across a post-apocalyptic version of the U.S. in search for a way to defend themselves against the mutated strain of the Codices fungus, which has turned a good portion of the human race into zombie -like creature known as Clickers.
In Dying Light, you play as Kyle Crane, an undercover agent on a mission to find antagonist, Suleiman, in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Harlan. To navigate the huge open world urban metropolis, players can utilize the protagonist’s parkour abilities.
Players must scavenge and explore in order to survive, all while being mindful of the ever-present risk of being infected by zombies. Dying Light received positive reviews upon its release, with many praising its unique first-person parkour navigation and storyline.
Frank and Vicky are, subsequently, sent on a life changing journey involving action and undead in abundance. Dead Rising 4 is an open world action game, like its predecessors, that is played from third-person perspective and features multiple weapons and skills to aid resistance against zombie hordes.
The game follows a group of survivors as they attempt to endure a zombie apocalypse in the fictional place of Trumbull Valley. The survivors become entrenched in political and military turmoil, as they learn that the army is trying to contain citizens in order to gather information about the zombie virus outbreak.
The gameplay in State of Decay combines third person combat with simulation, in which the player is in charge of a small group of survivors and must complete certain tasks in order to ensure their survival. In 7 Days to Die, players need to survive the randomly generated world in which they are spawned by sourcing all the necessary resources required to live.
Zombies will try to impede your progress, of course, as can other human players, if you decide to take the game online. There is lots of fun to be had in this game, and successful zombie survival feels particularly rewarding due to its difficulty.
Scavenging is essential to ensure your survival, and you must do this all while avoiding the impending threat of Romero style zombies. Project Zombie is an enjoyable indie title that was a welcome surprise in 2011, and still stands up as one of the best zombie survival games in 2019.
In fact, its level of gruesomeness is so extreme that it even drew complaints from some gamers and was banned from release in certain countries. The game is set in the fictional open world environment of Hanoi, a tropical resort situated off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

The game is set in the same post-apocalyptic world as the comic series and, apart from a few guest appearances, features a new cast of characters. It is here where the game wins, the character development is perfectly executed with some exceptional dialogue and plot progressions throughout the series.
Played from a third-person perspective, you have to interact with characters and items and, at certain points of the game, make choices that affect the outcome of the story. These choices often lead to unpredictable outcomes, what may seem like a good decision at the time could come back to haunt you.
