Zone cleaning isn’t any crazily complicated system, and you don’t need any special products. So for example, maybe each Monday you tackle the bathrooms and kitchen, Tuesdays you deal with the bedrooms, and so on.
Also, remember that just because you clean a certain zone on a certain day doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do your usual home tidying tasks every day, like wiping down bathroom sinks, making your bed, or wiping down your shower after each use. Doing those little 5 minute things every day helps make it, so you can clean each zone in one hour.
It’ll be hard to clean everything in one hour if you have to spend half that time putting things back where they belong! You know your home and how long it usually takes you to clean things, so keep that in mind when setting up your zones.
And some rooms you may just want to leave out, like the basement or garage, because they don’t truly need cleaning every week. Tuesday- Zone 2- Kitchen, Dining Room, Living Room Disinfect doorknobs and light switches Declutter Dust furniture, decor, blinds, etc.
Vacuum Wash kitchen + dining room floors Clean baseboards Refill hand soap and dish soap dispensers Straighten pantry Check for expired food Wipe down cabinets Wednesday- Zone 3- Home Office, Family Room Disinfect doorknobs and light switches Declutter Dust furniture, blinds, computer, TV, etc.
Friday- Zone 5- Foyer, Porch Disinfect doorknobs and light switches Declutter Dust furniture, blinds, decor, etc. Also, note that according to this schedule, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are my busiest days, while Friday is the lightest.
When you zone clean, you are taking the tasks that need to be done once every month or two, and dividing them up over the course of a week so ultimately you only spend 10-15 minutes per day deep cleaning. Over the course of that week, I divide the deep cleaning kitchen tasks up over each day.
On Tuesday I will clean the oven, stove top, and microwave. On Friday I will clean the inside windows in that room and catch up on anything I may have missed.
You may also find that the first time you attempt zone cleaning, it takes you much longer than the 10-15 minutes. If you haven’t cleaned a particular appliance all year or decluttered a closet in months, the job will be bigger.

Before I knew about zone cleaning, I would look around my house and feel nothing but complete overwhelm over the things that needed to be done. I have taken the idea of zone cleaning from Fly lady and tweaked it to work for my family.
You will notice I have some pretty big zone cleaning tasks listed here. If you have the time, break your zone cleaning down into 15 minute per day chunks.
This way you aren’t exhausting yourself trying to clean the entire zone in one day. I wish I could practice what I preach, but right now I’m homeschooling multiple children, so zones are usually tackled on the weekend.
You can do your zone cleaning tasks a little each day during the week, or all on the weekend if need be! I personally don’t care much for wiping down baseboards and walls, but doing these chores during your zone cleaning time will prevent you from having to do major spring-cleaning.
