Their diet consists mostly of vegetables and fruits, no meat, dairy or anything greasy. Red wigglers enjoy a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.

Pizza crust (without the cheese) Pasta (no butter sauce) Rice (brown or white, long or short grain) Bread (whole wheat, sourdough or whatever you like) Pancakes (or waffles without the whipped butter or cream) Of course, red wigglers also enjoy materials not in a healthy human diet.

So, in order to help you out we have decided to offer this infographic in physical form. You want to make sure you are feeding your worms a nutritious diet, but you don’t have the time to go research online.

Earthworms, especially the red wiggler variety, can quickly turn non-dairy and non-meat kitchen food waste into a rich compost for your soil.

Adding eggshells to the worms' diet can improve their living environment and help them process their food scraps more efficiently. Adding eggshells can help take the acidic edge off the composting bin.

Eggshells also provide grit, which helps the worms digest the rest of their food better. You’ll just have to feed them decomposing organic wastes, that have been cut or chopped into smaller pieces already; and are then buried under the ground (to sway away from unwanted visits from pests and to also avoid odor build-ups). Only feed them something that has been days old already; and have been produced by vegetable eating animals, like rabbits for example (manure from pets are not as healthy especially for worm consumption).

The acid content will definitely aid in lowering the pH level of the worm bin. Raw eggshells with some egg white’s still stuck inside (it’s best to clean these before using them for your worms, as these may carry diseases that can harm your compost pals).

Make it a point to take in these considerations on what to feed red wigglers, before you put in any kind of organic waste inside their bin. I’ll admit, throwing crunchy eggshells in the bin as worm food seems counterintuitive.

Sharp edges, slow to decompose, and full of stuff we would never use in the worm bin, anything egg related sounds like a great big no-no. In the next few minutes, you’ll learn just why that hard exterior of an egg works wonders in the worm bin, and how you can use yours to keep a healthy environment for your red wigglers.

It’s important to note that the perfectly-portioned protein source we enjoy so well in a scramble is also right near the top of Eugenia fetid’s DO NOT FEED list. That’s right, eggs are an animal product that can attract critters we want kept out of our worm bins.

However, when we get rid of the yolk and albumen, the amazingly delicate yet incredibly strong outer shell of an egg provides a very essential element in the diet of a worm, grit. Much like birds and other animals that have a gizzard, red wigglers to have this specialized muscular organ in their digestive tract.

Inside the gizzard small rocks and other gritty materials, like eggshells, help to break down large food particles for digestion. In essence, toothless worms use eggshell grit in the gizzard to “chew” the food they’ve eaten.

It’s the calcium within the eggshell that holds the key to unlocking reproductive intentions in the worms. Eggshells are a very safe worm composting amendment that safeguards you against the dangers of low pH.

Bedding with a high pH (too alkaline) however, requires a worm farmer to take entirely different measures. (mortar and pestle or food processor) Sprinkle eggshells evenly over the top and lightly fold into the compost.

The smaller you can get those eggshells, the more easily they will break down in the bin, be digested, and offer up their neutralizing/arousing calcium. One simple way I like to reduce that risk is to throw my shells right into the blender with food scraps if I haven’t gotten around to crushing them ahead of time.

For example, I wouldn’t want to overdo it on giving my worms fresh coffee grounds. There is no evidence to show that adding a great deal of pulverized eggshell harms a worm colony.

One good rule of thumb suggests it’s time to add more when there are no longer remains from your last eggshell application. Dietary restrictions and personal beliefs keep many worm farmers from enjoying eggs in their diets.

If that is the case for you, it’s especially important to keep a close eye on the acidity of your worm bin using a simple probe meter. If you need to raise the pH of your worm bedding without the use of eggshells, lime and other alkaline amendments are available from your local garden center or online.

Worms eat tiny, invisible, bacteria that feed on the food scraps that you add to your vermicomposting bin. You can feed your composting worms any vegetable food scraps including eggshells and coffee grounds.

NOTE: I frequently put small amounts of these foods in my worm composting bin without any problems. Cooked food often has seasonings, especially salt, which can harm your worms.

So, they will be able to eat roughly ½ a pound of food scraps per day assuming ideal bin conditions. If you want your worms to eat faster, chop the food scraps into small pieces ahead of time and throw them in the freezer overnight.

Chopping (some people even use a blender) increases the surface area of each piece of food making it easier for the worms (and the bacteria) to eat. Freezing and then thawing your worm food breaks the cell walls of the food which makes it more mushy (when thawed) and easier for the composting worms to eat.

Because they don’t have teeth, they can not bite off chunks of the food scraps. Therefore, they need to wait until the food scraps begin to rot and get soft and mushy.

If you keep your worm composting bin indoors you will want to manage it a bit more carefully to ensure that you never get fruit flies or foul odors. Plan to feed your outdoor composting worms about once every 2 or 3 weeks.
