While Minnesota has so far done an admirable job “flattening the curve” in its fight against COVID-19, the state isn't expected to reach its peak number of cases for another couple of weeks.

That makes blood drives like the one that will be hosted April 15 at Excel Energy Center all the more important. But with many of its traditional means of hosting blood drives on hold, and a large portion of the population working from home, the Red Cross needed to find a unique way to host a blood drive that could bring in people by the hundreds.

The Red Cross quickly hit its limit in looking for volunteers to come to downtown St. Paul to participate in the blood drive on April 15. Even donation stations will be abiding by the Center for Disease Control's strict social distancing mandate of at least six feet between people.

Plenty of hand sanitizer will be available for donors throughout the donation process, and snacks and water will be provided. “And the good news now is, the arena is about as clean as it has been in 20 years,” said Wayne Petersen, the Wild's Director of Community Relations and Hockey Partnerships.

All donors will also leave Excel Energy Center with a $20 gift card for use at The Hockey Lodge. Donors will also receive an autographed canvas of Zach Paris and Mike KOI, who have spent a bulk of the past week signing these special edition items as a way of thanking fans for their continued support of the team, and more importantly, for their willingness to come together during a time of great need for the Red Cross, our local community and the state of Minnesota.

NOTE: This story originally ran last month ahead of a blood drive at Excel Energy Center on April 15. All donors at the May 15th event will receive signed items from Wild players Ryan Outer and Dean Dunk.

Wild General Manager Bill Turin, his wife Kara and their four children have each volunteered to participate as donors. Instead, Excel Energy Center along with the Red Cross, the Wild and Anheuser-Busch, will host a blood drive at the arena later this month.

So filling an event at their home rink on Wednesday, April 15, more than a month after what might have been the final hockey game for some time was played, was not a huge surprise. Instead of lining up to watch the team battle for a playoff spot, 250 volunteers snapped up every available slot to donate blood at the 19,000-seat arena, at a socially responsible distance.

With the need to keep strangers six feet or more apart in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the extra space available on the floor of the arena, where normally there is an ice sheet, was put to good use. Among those first in line to donate blood were Wild interim head coach Dean Evasion and team president Matt Major, who said the idea for the event was to fill the arena while helping out in the community.

Red Cross officials said that many of the region’s blood drives scheduled for March were cancelled or had no-shows in the early days of the pandemic, as people were unsure about going out in public. On Wednesday everyone entering the arena had their temperature taken and all participants wore facemasks and were kept socially distant as they helped replenish the stocks of blood that are needed by area hospitals.

As for when there might be hockey in the arena again, the NHL has officially postponed -- not yet canceled -- the 2019-20 season, and there remains some optimism that playoff games could take place in June or later. “The best answer we can give to the rest of our season is hope, but beyond that, none of us can predict what’s going to happen tomorrow, forget about a couple of months from now,” Major said, adding that playing games in empty buildings has been discussed.

The Wild are teaming up with the American Red Cross to hold a blood drive April 15 at the empty Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. All workers will be wearing protective masks, and all donors will need to register ahead of time and have their temperatures taken before entering the arena.
