Thank goodness Pitchers has evolved over the years, and it isn't a fight to the death anymore. It's more a battle of wits: there are some puzzles to be solved, general weirdness to contend with, but above all, you must stay one step ahead, as not everyone plays by the rules...

(My sincere thanks to the author for my copy of Pitchers, which I was lucky enough to win via a recent giveaway on their website.) Despite the many parallels and similarities that struck me, while reading Pitchers, I also found Signal Founder's debut novel original, quirky, and often entertaining in its own right. The accompanying artwork by Laura Ellen Anderson really captures the madcap sense of fun here, and the enchantment of Riga's adventures.

Although not destined to become a personal favorite, I do think this is a fantasy novel that young girls in particular will enjoy. 2.5 stars Riga Whicabim is resigned to her dreary, horrid life hiding in a shed from her terrible cheese-making guardian Miss Hers.

Then Fern the Fabulous Fairy shows up and informs Riga that she is actually a witch ! The winner gets to stay in the glamorous Ritzy City while the loser has to go home.

The winner gets to stay in the glamorous Ritzy City while the loser has to go home. When Riga meets the other competitors she realizes she HAS to beat the mean, awful Felicity Bat.

Accompanied by her new friends Fluffanora and Peggy Pig wiggle, Riga sets out to win WitchWars, so she can stay in Ritzy City. The author plucked fun ideas out of her imagination, made up some rhyming phrases for spells and voilà- witch world.

I did not like the early emphasis on appearance/fashion and celebrity status but never fear readers, some characters and themes are the same as Harry Potter, such as the importance of kindness and friendship. I liked that emphasis a lot and of course if you are familiar with the Tri-Wizard Tournament, you know or think you know, how this is going to end (before the portray to the graveyard).

She makes new friends and discovers the fun witch world and never wants to leave. Like Ron, she comes from a less privileged background, earning the sneers of Felicity Bat.

She's the Draco Malfoy character who thinks money and heritage can beat kindness and loyalty. Felicity's sidekick, Aggie Hoof, is the richest girl in the story.

Well, if 'The Worst Witch and 'The Hunger Games' had a baby which was raised in the settings of every Saturday morning cartoon imaginable, one after another, whilst high on whatever is keeping the Looney Tunes alive and tripping, then Pitchers might be the spectacular, cracking and goofy result. I really enjoyed this witch product. It took me right back to my days of reading female-led middle school books such as 'Jane Blonde' and 'Emily Wind snap'.

Riga Whicabim is a nine-year-old orphan girl, living with the abusive cheese water-fanatic Miss Hers. In a garden shed one day, Riga finds that a slug is not her only company.

She is told by a fairy named Fran (the Fabulous Fairy, as she'll never let you forget) that she is a witch and must go down the plughole into an underground world called Linville, where all the pipes lead to and where all the witches live. Once landing in Ritzy City, Riga is made to compete in the Pitchers, which used to involve killing, but now it's a televised scavenger hunt (the Wars in the title was kept because it's catchy), along with other young witches, in order to win the highest honor of becoming Top Witch, ruler of Ritzy City and beyond.

Everything is fast in Pitchers ', with plenty of silly jokes left on the pages. There is no use comparing it to well-known franchises in literature like 'Harry Potter' and 'The Hunger Games', because it is much lighter than any of those.

Riga is a curious, adorable Gothic heroine with her own fair share of humor, understated compared to the rest of the full-on, loud, OUT cast. Riga's new best friend in Linville is Peggy Pig wiggle, who has dripping black gunk in her fizzy hair, and cares for Riga deeply, for she is a poor, lonely witch with no discernible gift but a loving family to give her confidence.

Apart from that and coming from Linville, Peggy has quite a lot of surprising things in common with Riga. Is a devil-may-care fashion designer's daughter who's as cool as any spoiled rich girl can be.

She becomes Riga's friend too, for Fluffanora is interested in the fashions of the world above the pipes. Simultaneously a bored, grumpy big sister type and a loving, helpful confidante, Fluffanora is instantly a favorite character of mine.

Rivals in the Pitchers include the haughty bully Felicity Bat, from a prestigious and infamous family legacy, and the mean girl Aggie Hoof, obsessed with the fashion magazine 'Toad'. Lizzie Beast and Patty Pigeon also make up the list of creatively silly names in this book.

There's non-stereotypical personality traits to mix in this witch's bowl (cauldrons are out of style now, according to Linville). Not a lot of magic or spells occur in this witch book, especially one for children, but it doesn't matter.

Flaws: Without the illustrations, the reader wouldn't get a clear picture of what each character looks like, and they certainly wouldn't know that Peggy, Fluffanora and Aggie are meant to have dark skin. Nothing is really explained about Riga's origin and how she came to be adopted by Miss Hers, who hates her but had kept her anyway, but maybe that's for the sequels to explore.

Maybe I will check out the sequels, for I enjoy these characters and this world, and I have nothing to lose by diving into these quick reads. We aren't expecting who the winner was. Can't wait to read the 2nd book with my 7-year-old. Well she feels asleep, but I want to find out what happened.

The book starts with our main character Riga finds out she is a witch and is taken to the Ritzy City/Linville that apparently resides when one takes the route through a sink. Well, guess what happens when one is pushed through a pipe at top speed.

I really like the idea, and while I was a bit worried it would be a full out war, it was more of a scavenger hunt with hints here and there. I really loved the Pitchers, it gave us more insight in this world (since it travelled all over the land where the witches live), but it was also just exciting.

You would expect that one with such an upbringing would turn out to be rotten or depressed, but instead this girl is full of power. A good intro to chapter books for elementary school kids.

Riga of course protests and tells Fran she isn’t a witch and has no desire to be one either. I won a copy of this book on Topped to read and review. Tiga Whicabim is nine years old and lives the miserable Miss He who refers to her as brat and serves her cheese water for her tea.

The illustrations in this book are of equal fun and tie in pretty well with this quirky little read. For more reviews, check out my blog: Craft-Cycle A delightful read brimming with hilarity and whimsy as the reader follows a cast of the adorable and deplorable.

It was so much fun reading along as they work to solve the clues and get themselves out of the strange situations they find themselves in. A nice story of discovery, exploration, and adventure, with new friendships thrown into the mix.

I can't wait to read the rest of the series and other books by Signal Founder! I read this to see what my 7-year-old daughter had picked off the shelf and was talking so animatedly about. It's a lovely mix of adventure, friendship and a detailed love of fashion. So enjoyable I read the whole series.4 stars as I'm an adult so this was a bit short, but perfect for a primary age girl. Also, to be recommended in advance of World Book day.

A fantastic, laugh out loud story about a girl who discovers she's a witch when she is anonymously entered into the Pitchers '.

Riga is a fantastic character who uses her brains, kindness and curiosity to survive in her new world. Would be great for a middle school class's read aloud. A fantastic, laugh out loud story about a girl who discovers she's a witch when she is anonymously entered into the Pitchers '.

Violet and I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in the series, which is perhaps not surprising as it is like an Amazing Race competition in a creatively imagined witch world! It's a perfect MG witch adventure! Been reading this a couple of chapters at a time as a bedtime story.
